Just a couple of thoughts about when Locke put the map he drew into the vaccum tube in the Pearl hatch:
- Why did he do it in the first place? Did he know what would happen to the map, and wanted to alert the Dharma scientists that the survivors know about them and their hatches? Or was he simply not thinking and did it in the heat of the moment? - Does the tube actually lead anywhere? The video said that notebooks filled with observations entered into the tube would go to the other scientists, but would they? Or does the tube just lead to above a big hole or rubbish bin where the reports are dumped? It could be a test for the people in the Pearl hatch - to see if they follow instructions.

I think he just wanted to see if the vacuum tubes worked as he seemed to know what they were straight away (did they have them in the box factory perhaps?) and did it without thinking. However if somebody gets hold of this map and check the camera's they will see Locke and Eko snooping around and there may be reprucussions!

But if he just wanted to see if the tube worked or not, why didn't he just look around and see if there was a scrap piece of paper to use? (Like from the notebook) Why would he risk giving 'the enemy' knowledge that the survivors probably know more than they should? Perhaps he was just excited by the discovery of the hatch and wasn't thinking as much as he should have been doing. Yes, if the Pearl hatch is also under surveillance, then Locke and Eko could be in trouble! If there were people recently in the Pearl hatch watching the Swan, then would they have seen the blast door map come down in front of Locke I wonder?

I was surprised by that as well... He spends hours trying to draw the map then whisks it away on a whim? Does he think there's no more useful information on it?
And also, I'd be surprised if Locke didn't know what a vacuum tube did, I'mp retty sure he was just seeing if it works.

I agree it was likely that he just wanted to check that the "Vacum" worked, I dont think he was at the time paying much attention, and will probably notice later that he put his little drawing that apparently took him 2 episodes to draw up the tubes basically!
Now presuming that this "vacum" goes somewhere will this now mean that our losties are in even more danger?? Will these scientists come for them?? Much to think about! |

At that point, he had no faith in the value of the map or any of the hatch related stuff, so I suppose he thought it as good a thing to test the tube with as any other bit of scrap paper. Perhaps he deliberately wanted to get rid of the map. Might come to regret it though, when he remembers that, though he now believes the button and the coincidences mean nothing, there are still murderous people on the island, and monsters and magic legs and everything.

I agree with Murgatroyd. He never trusted the map anyway, and besides he just wanted to check that it worked. Might have done it has a warning of sorts - we are onto you type thing

I was shocked and slightly angered by Locke's action. But I saw it has him letting go of his supposed purpose and destiny. Later on we see his faith in tatters as Eko tries to rally him. I think this was a pre-curser to Locke admitting to himself that it is all a big experiment [in his eyes at the time]. So by letting go of the hatch map..he was letting go of the hatch..his hatch. imo.

I can see this hatch appearing in my story. The vaccum could be useful...
I think Locke just tested to see if it still worked. I suspect he will find the map at the Swan hatch. |

I doubt that the vaccum tube leads to the Swan hatch - observations about the occupants of the Swan hatch are entered into the tube, so I can't see those observations going to the very people being observed!
Unless of course Mr. Candle was lying...
