I think Locke had an agenda there though..

At that stage he was 'Boar hunting' Locke..a man who connected with the eath and derived strength from it. He was a man who wanted the freedom of reduced responsibility. He needed to be free..and by convincing Jack that he was the leader he was able to do this whilst Jack had to deal with the day to day running of the camp.

Locke made all of the important decisions.
