I saw it has him letting go of his supposed purpose and destiny................So by letting go of the hatch map..he was letting go of the hatch..his hatch. imo.
I like this idea a lot - I think that really fits with the 'pathetic little life' speech Locke gave. Totally agree.
Thanks pynch. Yeah..it seemed to fit well with his mindset. He'd just discovered another hatch and saw that it was filled with observation tools and other things which alluded to the whole 'experiment' angle that Jack jabbered on about in Adrift/Orientation[?]..and i guess Locke was begining to feel that Jack may have been right afterall. I mean what a comedown that must be for someone who was so certain in their faith.

It just seemed as if he was letting go of his faith in the hatch and his purpose.

I can see this hatch appearing in my story. The vaccum could be useful...

I think Locke just tested to see if it still worked. I suspect he will find the map at the Swan hatch.
I wonder where the Swan hatch vacuum is then? Maybe there's an other section to the Swan hatch..it sure looked like that might be the case on the map.
Maybe it went up Kates bottom? Plenty of room.

Sorry I should be more serious.

Isn't there an area they could not get too? I remember Sayid getting all sweaty (just before the Kate shower scene) and they could not get through.

Default The Vaccum Tube

I've been flicking through these threads that have been transferred over to our superior C4 section this morning, and don't recall seeing anything about that tube which is meant to be used to send the information the Pearl-hatchers get straight to the Dharma Initiative people, according to the orientation video..

This struck me as really weird, due to the fact that the people that are (or were) receiving the information must be fairly nearby.. unless the tube goes underwater at some point.

And then Locke goes and sends his little map of the Island up there! (albeit before they watched the video.)

Where does it go?

A different matter I noticed was the fact that the hatch bit that Locke and Eko used to get down there seemed to be the only entrance/exit. Was there another way out that I didn't notice? Must've been annoying having to prise open that big metal man-hole cover every time the crew had to get in there!

EDIT: Damn I just noticed Ki's thread on this, sorry!

I was surprised by that as well... He spends hours trying to draw the map then whisks it away on a whim? Does he think there's no more useful information on it?

And also, I'd be surprised if Locke didn't know what a vacuum tube did, I'mp retty sure he was just seeing if it works.
yes, because he was always saying 'the question mark, the question mark' whilst writing.... Now he found said question mark, it had no imediately recognisable use, as it's not hard for him to rememebr that there are 6 hatches, because he didn't draw anything complex

Well, for what its worth, I don't think they found "The Question Mark". Not the one on the UV map in the hatch anyway. Yes, OK, so there was a question mark on the ground and all that, to mark the entrance to the pearl.

But the pearl is just hatch number (5? not sure) whereas the "?" on the map was like the spider in the net, the centre of the island, the control centre for Dharma, what do I know. I don't expect that to be just a room with 9 TV screens, two arm chairs and a fridge full of beer cans (I made the last bit up )

I don't remember if Locke sent his map up the tube before or after he saw the orientation video. But either way, why didn't he use one of the containers?
And if the information in the orientation video was genuine, how come there wasn't anyone inside the hatch making notes, or even a partially filled notebook?

Hmmm...

I think he sent it up before he watched the film.

No notebooks were filled in because i assume they [the workers] had sent them via the vacuum tube or took them with them.

I was surprised by this. I thought that he'd have kept it for future reference in seeing what is in the other hatches though.

What really annoyed me about this episode was Jack acting "Leader" again, it really annoys me when he does that.

Well Jack is more of a leader than anyone else, even Locke conceded he was the leader in white rabbit.

'A leader can't lead, until he knows where he is going'

While that may be true, he acts irrationally, such as he was going to leave Libby in order to go after Henry, knowing he is the only doctor on the island.

Leaders should not act irrationally.

I wish he had been eaten in the first episode.
