Default The island doesnt heal everybody?

Hey there,
In "Something Nice Back Home" Rose comments how strange it is that Jack (the Hero) gets appendicitis the night before they are supposed to leave the island, when the island is a place that heals people rather than makes them sick.
So how come the island heals some and doesn't heal others? Maybe Nikki deserved to die, but did Boone? Why is Jack getting sick NOW, as Rose asks? Just wondering...
Any ideas would be appreciated...

Perhaps the Island cannot heal some things, or it could be a battle between Jacob and Esau in regard to whom they heal or do not heal in order to defeat the other in their "game".

Jack was the reason that the O6 returned and perhaps Jacob made him sick so that he could not leave:

1) Because Jacob needs Jack
2) Because Jacob would thwart Esau's plans to use Lockes body in S5.

I honestly think Jacob is not as good as everybody thought he was upon seeing The Incident and I think many were quick to deem Esau as the bad one of the two.

Though, the healing could relate to the Island specifically - assuming of course it is it's own entity, seperate from Jacob and Esau. In other words, the Island chose not to heal Jack for whatever reason, or it was just random.

hmm
i see what you're saying, and hope that it isn't random...
i guess it could be to do with the island being it's own entity, and choosing who it heals.. though i dont believe there is enough evidence to prove that the island is.., I do however like the thought that its caused by the 'game' between Esau and Jacob.
Cheers

I agree with Reed on this. I think that the island not only has the ability to heal but also to make one sick.

The island did not want Jack to leave, therefore it caused him to become ill.

I also am of the belief that Jacob may not necessarily be the good guy in all of this. Lost has beat us over the head with the fact that things aren't always as they seem. Just because Jacob wears white does not neccessarily make him the good guy. It seems to me as if the writers are very subtly giving us clues that Jacob is the bad guy.

I think that the island has it's own thoughts and that it does not heal all, but those whom the island wishes to cure

I think that there is something greater than Esau and Jacob, whether it is other people or whether it is the Island itself.

The Jacob vs Esau issue does seem odd at times - take for instance Jacob brought Locke back to life when he fell out of the window, yet Esau used Locke for his loophole. I wonder which of the two cured his paralysis, if either of them did. Perhaps the Island is doing things to further the 'Game' between the two.

What I find a little puzzling is that the Island could surely have made greater attempts to keep them on the Island, and making Jack sick was a rather small attempt.

Yes I completely agree about Jacob KsF - I feel he was winding up Esau in the Finalé and has been a thorn in Esau's side for a long time. We have been giving clues that he is good, but also clues that he is bad also. He may be a greater manipulator than Esau and Ben put together.
